“Reporting from Wilmington, This Is Rabbi Peter Grumbacher: Returning To Virtual Service”

I’m sure you’ve heard of “interventions,” you know, when those who love you tell you you’re an idiot. Well, my three kids have sent me a barrage of vocal/email/text interventions with that message. They asked me to visit Beth El Congregation only virtually, that it’s too dangerous for me to spend a few days every other weekend out of our house. I capitulated realizing that 90% of what I do is already a virtual rabbinate. And on top of it I had to admit to myself that I’m in “that” demographic (ugh! that word!!).

I’ll be in town this weekend but until things get better, I’ll be Zooming from home from then on.

That means the worship services I conduct will not be livestreamed, rather Zoomed. Someone will send out the Zoom invitations the weeks I’m “on.” I’ll be letting everyone know what prayerbook and service number we’ll be using and calling on volunteers to read selected passages. If you want to be a “regular” volunteer, someone I can call upon (in advance), please let me know.

If I remember correctly, we had Zoom services just about every week this summer. Between me and the Ritual Committee worship volunteers I’m sure that will be the case in the ensuing weeks as well. More information will come out soon in that regard.

I’ll be scheduling other Zoom programs as well: adult ed and the like. If you’ve got some ideas, let me know.

This difficult situation will end but, in the meantime, we have to pull with the spiritual punches as we are pulling with all the other ones. I pray that all of you remain healthy with lessened anxieties and heightened hope.... especially after January 20th!
